Hygiene as Sensory Safety
Dopamine decor is an interior design philosophy that prioritizes color, texture, and personal joy to stimulate a little dopamine hit in your brain. When applied to hygiene and self-care areas, it can actually help with executive dysfunction — transforming "demand-heavy" tasks into sensory-rewarding rituals that you might actually look forward to.
For so many of us with ADHD or trauma histories, the bathroom is a place of "The Great Doom." It is a room of demands—showering, brushing teeth, skincare—that require high executive function and often trigger sensory overwhelm.
Traditional advice tells you to "just push through" or use a habit tracker. But from what I've seen, behavior modification rarely works when the environment itself is a sensory desert. So many neurodivergent people experience this as Task Avoidance. To fix the avoidance, we've gotta fix the dopamine response.
